How will I train?

Before you start your training, you will attend 'Flying Start' – a one-week programme for all new trainees, where you will get the chance to meet your peers, and we ensure that you have the basic tools necessary to prepare you for entering the classroom.

You will begin your placement at the very start of the course, spending four days each week in the classroom (for full-time trainees). One day a week will be dedicated to core training, delivered online with all trainees coming together for theory-based learning which is delivered by experts within the field of teaching. This will be a blended model of online and face-to-face sessions. This structure allows you to immediately apply what you learn in training to your classroom practice the following day.

You will also attend three or four days of regional training throughout the year. This will be a blended model of online and face-to-face sessions at a location in Sheffield.

Assessment

For QTS: Assessment is ongoing throughout the year, and includes observation of your practice and evidence of your success from mentors, tutors and yourself. You will be assessed against the NIoT ITT curriculum as the year progresses, and against the Teachers’ Standards at the end of the programme.

For PGCE: Assessment is by three master’s level assignments, which are both academically robust and grounded in your day-to-day practice.
