Teaching Apprenticeships (PGTA)
Earn a salary. Get your teaching qualifications. Launch your teaching career.
To undertake the PGTA, you must already be employed by a school or education provider that is able to support the apprenticeship. Unfortunately, we are not able to arrange employment on your behalf.
Our Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is an ideal next step for anyone currently working in a school support role – whether as a teaching assistant, learning mentor, cover supervisor, or administrative staff. Already embedded in the school environment, you’re in a strong position to transition smoothly into a teaching role. With the structured support and high-quality training offered through the PGTA, we will help you build the skills and confidence needed to thrive as a qualified teacher.
Our Post Graduate Teaching Apprenticeship (PGTA) is a 12-month training programme that allows recruits to gain qualified teacher status (QTS) and a teaching apprenticeship qualification, whilst remaining in paid employment in school.
Why Choose a teaching apprenticeship?
- Earn while you learn. As a teaching apprentice, you will be employed by a school and receive a salary throughout your training – no student loans, no tuition fees. It's a cost-effective way to become a qualified teacher without the financial burden.
- Real classroom experience from day one. You will work alongside experienced teaching staff, gradually taking on more responsibility as your confidence grows. Learn by doing, with the support of a mentor every step of the way.
- Expert support and training. Your training is split between your school placement and STTA. You'll receive high-quality professional development, one-to-one mentoring, and regular feedback to help you thrive.
You can undertake a primary apprenticeship or a specific subject apprenticeship at secondary level. Our blended learning approach combines in-school experience, centre-based training and off the job training.
We also offer the PGTA SEND, a specialist programme for those wishing to specialise in SEND settings. This programme has been designed to support trainee teachers working with pupils in special school settings or provision units within mainstream schools.
